Built by General Motors with specifications laid out by Segway, the EN-V does, as clichéd as it sounds, look like something out of a science fiction movie. It seems that while most car companies are merely thinking about placing an electric engine in their cars, the EN-V seems to go several steps further.
First of all, it’s hard to say if it’s a car at all, possessing as it does only two wheels. It has no bumper, no side impact bars, no air bag – in fact, very few of the things we associate with the conventional car. This is because the vehicle is being developed to be completely autonomous, and therefore, crucially, to be able to see any kind of dangerous obstacle and avoid it.
The vehicle appears to be a mechanical nanny. Apparently, it can take you to work while you do other things, thereby saving you the time you would spend at the wheel. Whilst you’re at work, you can program the EN-V to go off and do the shopping for you, thereby freeing up even more time. You don’t have to wait around finding a parking spot – the EN-V will drop you off so you can get on with your business and find a space all by itself.
The EN-V seems more like a life changer than merely a life enhancer. With its ability to avoid crashes or scrapes, and its simplicity of design, the term car breakdown might become a far less common phrase, although I presume as amazing as these vehicles are, they will on occasion fail.
If you were looking for a revolution in road travel, this might just be it – especially for built up areas.
