Ever thought of taking a road trip to Romania? It’s not at the top of most driver’s road trip wish-lists, but by all accounts, the country does offer what is arguably one of the finest driving routes in Europe – certainly Eastern Europe. The Transfagarasan road was built between 1970 and 1974 by Nicolae Ceausescu, when the dictator feared a Soviet invasion and wanted to improve access to various parts of the country for his military. While the road took many lives and a great deal of money to build, modern day Romanians – and lucky visitors – can get to enjoy some truly spectacular scenery.
Because of the road’s layout and high altitude, it is only open from June to September – but witnessing the beautiful beeches and pines along this snaking route in the summer months only adds to its charm.
There are many highlights along the way, including Poienari castle – the only castle to be built by Dracula. Of course, qualities possessed by the real Dracula and the one in the Bram Stoker novel are up for debate, but nevertheless, seeing such a spooky, isolated castle for real is likely to send shivers down your spine. If you’re feeling fit, you might like to stop and climb the 1480 steps to the top – where you’ll find the view is well worth the effort.
As you travel up the road and explore the minor roads attached to it (make sure you take a satnav or high quality map with you), you’ll discover picturesque waterfalls, lakes and dramatic mountains again and again.
Before setting off, it’s a good idea to ensure sure your annual breakdown cover includes Europe, or to take out an alternative short term cover option instead. The Transfagarasan road might be considered an advanced road trip route, but one that is ultimately extremely fascinating and rewarding.
