It looks good, but it doesn’t look that fast – at least not as fast as 202mph. But Bentley says their new Continental GT Speed Convertible is the fastest four-seat convertible on the planet.
It makes use of the same 616bhp twin turbocharged W12 engine found in the GT Speed Coupe, which was launched recently. It can hit 62mph in 4.1 seconds and 100mph in 9.7 seconds.
Torque can amount to 590lb per ft, produced between 2000 and 500rpm, which is sent to all four wheels by way of an 8 speed automatic gearbox. The impressive gearbox helps give the car 15 per cent better fuel economy compared to its predecessor (19mpg on EU Combined cycle). The gearbox also boasts ‘block shifting’ technology, enabling it to change from 8th to 4th gear directly – thus improving acceleration.
The new GT has an improved chassis too, with self-levelling suspension which is 10mm lower than the basic version of the car. It also has better anti-roll bars and re-jigged steering. Details in the exterior design let onlookers know that there is some serious muscle here, with 21inch wheels and air intakes in the front bumper.
It’s a beautiful car, but at £165,000, it should be. Not the kind of car you would lend out to your friends or relatives too readily – not even if they had personal cover for car breakdowns from startrescue.co.uk!
The Bentley GT Speed Convertible will be seen in the flesh for the first time at Detroit Motor Show on January 14.
