When it comes to driving holidays on mainland Europe, there are so many superb destinations that it can be hard to decide where to head for. One destination that appears to have delighted many a driver, is that of Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
I have to confess, I have only seen the Amalfi Coast rendered (admittedly quite well) on a video game system, but from what I have heard, experiencing the real thing is far superior – if a little more dangerous. If you’re holidaying in the area, Sorrento is likely to keep you busy for a long time, but it’s worth pulling yourself away from its various delights to experience the Amalfi coast road.
Many say that the Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful – if not the most beautiful – coasts on the Mediterranean. The coastline itself is fairly short, connecting Sorrento to Salerno, but what it may lack in length, it makes up for with some of the bendiest, most precarious coastal roads you are likely to find anywhere. Add to this picturesque sandy coves, delightful orchards and superb restaurants, and you have a truly exceptional road trip.
You may well have already seen the Amalfi Coast on TV – it has been the backdrop for numerous car commercials. As stunning as the views are though, it’s important to keep your eyes on the road – as these can be perilous indeed, comprised as they are of numerous consecutive hair pin bends where the passing distance between vehicles can be very slight indeed.
If you are thinking about taking a European road trip this summer, there are few destinations that beat the Amalfi Coast – just make sure you have your European breakdown cover fully up to date before you take on those Italian drivers!
