A startrescue.co.uk story...

The British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar has been in the headlines a great deal recently following a dispute over an artificial reef built by Gibraltarian authorities.

Seemingly in response to the reef, Spanish authorities have increased border checks, creating huge delays for workers, residents and tourists. This latter type of visitor is an important component of the Gibraltarian economy, but is one that has been hard-hit by the dispute.

The political spat between the UK and Spain was recently exacerbated when a Spanish mayor posted a collage depicting Spanish forces invading The Rock.

Many Britons who take driving holidays in Spain decide to stop off at Gibraltar and climb the famous rock. But long queues have made this much more difficult.

If you are planning to visit Gibraltar, be sure to build in several extra hours when entering from the Spanish border. Bring plenty of water as temperatures in southern Spain can be extremely high this time of year. If you have children with you, ensure you bring such items as games, colouring books and DVDs to keep them entertained.

The dispute over the territory is unlikely to be resolved very soon, with an escalating war of words taking place between London and Madrid. However, for those who are keen to visit the famous rock, and have the patience to deal with Spanish-side border checks, Gibraltar offers a plethora of historic attractions, as well as duty free shopping.

Those who take startrescue.co.uk’s European breakdown insurance will be covered in Gibraltar as well as mainland Spain.
