Coming in at under 1000 square miles, Luxembourg might not seem like the most obvious choice for a road trip. But as many motorists have discovered, this tiny country – the second smallest in the European Union – offers a great deal to those who love the open road, history and countryside.
As well a rich history, which still leaves its marks on the cities and towns of Luxembourg in the form of churches and historic buildings, Luxembourg offers a great deal of pretty green countryside to explore. The northern third of the country – Oesling – which forms part of the Ardenne, offers plenty of hills and low-lying mountains to explore. The capital, Luxembourg City, is ideal if you want the buzz of a reasonably big city, but with the friendliness of a much smaller settlement.
Everywhere you’ll find excellent food – influenced by the nation’s proximity to France.
After taking the ferry from Dover, the journey to Luxembourg is fairly straight forward, taking under 5 hours all in. The quickest route goes through Belgium and actually uses the Brussels bypass. Good quality, smooth roads should ensure that the trip is a comfortable one.
If your normal breakdown cover only covers you for a UK breakdown, consider taking out short term European cover, providing a little extra peace of mind so you can enjoy your trip to the fullest.
