Once the butt of a thousand jokes, Skoda has re-invented itself as a highly reliable, affordable carmaker, helped in no small part by being a member of the Volkswagen Group. Indeed, roadside assistance firms are seeing Skodas less frequently with each new model. And the latest offerings – Octavia vRS hatch and estate versions – are destined to build on Skoda’s already strong brand.
What do the motoring press think of the vRS?
The Telegraph lauds the car’s generous interior space, as well as its attractive asking price. It notes its MQB architecture, used across the VW Empire, but here enabling the Octavia to be longer than most other VW clones. 590 litres of luggage space for the hatch and 610 for the estate – are also plus points. The Telegraph says the new vRS is “practical, well made and good value,” giving it four out of five stars.
Auto Express points out that the new model is Skoda’s fastest ever (with a top speed of 154mph), offering the engine muscle of a Golf GTI for a far more palatable price. It highlights a few drawbacks such as austere styling and imperfect handling, ensuring the Golf GTI is still top dog on both counts – but reminds their readers that the price point and practicality of this sporty Octavia make it a very attractive purchase. Auto Express also awarded 4/5 stars.
The BBC Top Gear website compliments Skoda (and VW) for the Octavia’s impressive chassis, great engines (petrol and diesel) and generous cabin space. The Octavia vRS might not be as fun or as sporty looking as some cars (it is a policeman’s favourite, as TG points out), but it is a wonderfully practical car that gives you as much speed and agility as you’re ever likely to need. Top Gear awarded it 7/10 points.
