To help reduce the impact of a summer lost, autumn gives us a welcome hit of dazzling colour just when we need it most. The reds, yellows and browns of fallen foliage are to be enjoyed across Europe, but there are some particularly great spots for an autumn road trip on the continent. Here are three of the best.
Piedmont, Italy.
While the fallen leaves in this area create a brilliant display for the eyes, it is your taste buds that will fall in love with Piedmont. October is the season of truffles, mushrooms, chestnuts, chocolate and nougat – all of which have special festivals dedicated to them at this time of year. There are plenty of roads to explore in this region, covering rolling hills that are alive with the colours of autumn.
The Scottish Highlands
Closer to home, Scotland offers an incredible autumn display each year. The only tough part is deciding where you want to go. The area in and around Pitlochry is perfect for a road trip, with beautiful hills and glens, and lots of high quality accommodation to enjoy. From Pitlochry you can visit the fantastic Atholl Palace, River Tummel and Black Spout Falls – with great ease.
The Romantic Road, Germany
Winding through southern Germany and the Bavarian Alps, this 220 mile route is arguably one of the most majestic in Europe. The autumn colours are sure to charm you, as will the many beautiful villages and towns that line the way. You can also take in the famous Neuschwanstein Castle – the inspiration for Disney’s pink castle – and enjoy numerous walks and trails as you go.
If you’re heading for the continent this autumn, ensure you’ve taken out annual or short term European breakdown cover first – so you can enjoy your trip with complete peace of mind.
