Most people in the government, in the motoring trade and on the street agree that electric has a big role to play in the future of the car. But precisely which technology will dominate, and who will produce it, are questions that persist and in many ways put people off buying one. After all, who wants to by a car that might be completely obsolete in 5 years?
But Renault is aiming to address some of the key concerns surrounding electric with its Fluence ZE model. It has been designed to be driven over a specially-designed charge point, in order to be charged up automatically. It also has a battery with better range. The new technology would mean saying goodbye to the hassle of going to a petrol pump, getting out and undoing the petrol cap, then watching as the numbers spin. Easy-to-use drive-over charge points would exist in place of, or in, petrol stations, but the technology has actually been designed so the car is charged overnight. This means that a driver may never need to worry about the energy levels of his or her car again.
Renault ultimately want to see a network of roads which actually charge car batteries as the car is driven. Amazing though such notions are, those days are long way off. But the industry needs visionary ideas like this to kick-start the revolution, and allay fears over high initial costs that have dissuaded so many private and commercial motorists from investing in the new technology.
It does seem that one day the face of motoring will be changed forever – and for the good of all. One of the few things that is unlikely to change is the process of getting a breakdown cover quote. That’ll be as easy as ever – with startrescue.co.uk.
