Richard Yarrow’s opinion for www.startrescue.co.uk, providing low cost Car Breakdown cover

When it comes to influential motoring magazines, you don’t get much more important than What Car?. The monthly buying guide has long had a reputation for impartial reviews and consumer advice, so the opinions of its testers count.

But the views of its readers are perhaps less authoritative; 30,000 of them have voted the BMW 1-Series Coupé as the ‘Best Car 2010’, which seems a bit of an odd choice. This is a niche two-door vehicle from a premium brand which most people can’t afford to consider, aimed at the minority of people who don’t need practicality in a car. It’s hardly representative of mainstream motoring. But, hey, if that’s what the readers voted top, who am I to argue?

More understandable is the Ford Focus convertible being ‘honoured’ with the worst car gong. It’s been a rare flop for the company which in many ways is setting the benchmark for dynamics and desirability amongst volume brands. The leaky roof is the biggest gripe. That said, Ford did win the MPV prize for the C-MAX.

Perhaps the most interesting pair of awards are for the best and worst manufacturer, which go to Skoda and Saab respectively. It’s not that many years ago when those two honours might reasonably have been switched. The only glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel for Saab bosses is that they can see where Skoda was a few years ago, and where it is now.

Praise should also go to Mercedes, which took all three podium places in the Executive & Luxury category Top dog was the CLS, following by the E-Class and S-Class.
