Bulgaria is one of the Balkans’ larger countries, and as such offers many miles of road to explore. Once you’ve managed to negotiate the busy streets of Sofia, you’ll find that the roads of Bulgaria are fairly quiet – and perfect for a road trip. Here is just one itinerary you might consider.

To explore some of Bulgaria’s beautiful woodland areas, go east from the capital on the A1 motorway, then head South at Pazardzhik. After this, take the B-road that passes Batak – where the uprising against the Ottomans took place in the 19th Century – then head towards Despot and the Rhodope Mountains. Going east, take the road towards Devin, a modestly-sized town famous for its hot springs, massages and mineral water.

From here take the road east, then north – bypassing Smolyan unless you wish to explore the caves there – then come out onto a mountain road that offers many beautiful views. On the way, be sure to take in the wineries of Asenovgrad before stopping at Plovdiv, which many say is the best city in the country. Plovdiv has a well kept old town, offering a bohemian feel and a vibrant nightlife.

After this, head North to Kazanlak, where you can witness a unique combination of Romas, Turks and Bulgarians selling their wares at the local market. From here, go north across the Valley of Roses, where you’ll eventually arrive at Shipka Pass, dominated by the impressive golden dome of a Russian Church.

If you have an EU or international driving license you are permitted to drive in Bulgaria. And you would be well advised to take out breakdown cover for Europe – for a little more peace of mind.
