While undeniably a beautiful country, Norway is not thought of by many as the ideal location to enjoy a road trip. But to miss out on this nation’s extraordinary scenery and superb quality roads, is to miss out on one of the best driving experiences in Europe.
One particularly beautiful route is that of Bergen to Oslo. Why not start at Bergen’s ferry port or airport, then take the direct route (a mere 350 miles) to Oslo, which takes in some stunning interior landscapes; green and forested and typically Norwegian. After enjoying the many delights of the capital city, it’s time to take the longer coast road back to Bergen. Along the way you will pass through Kristiansand and Stavanger which are both wonderful towns in their own right, but what will really mesmerise you will be the rocky coastline, the mountains in the distance and the pretty little villages that overlook the sea.
Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for Elk – they can damage even the most robust of vehicles. But with one eye on the possibility of Elk, your other eye should be taking in the glittering fjords, fairy tale timbered buildings and dense forests that are abound in this part of Norway.
Don’t forget to stop by and see the delightful little white cottages at Skudeneshavn near Haugesund, which constitute one of the most beautiful villages in Norway.
Returning to Bergen in good time, you’ll be able to enjoy this picturesque town at your leisure – and don’t forget to try the excellent seafood restaurants.
Before setting off, just make sure you have your short term European cover up to date, giving you added peace of mind as you drive.
