Far from suffering an industry-wide car breakdown, UK based car making seems to be very strong at present. In addition to the news that Lotus Cars plans to take on up to 1200 new staff in the coming years, Nissan has announced that it will be creating 200 engineering posts at its Sunderland production facility too.
While any new jobs in the car industry is of course good news, it is perhaps even more heartening because many of the new positions are being created in order to make batteries for Nissan’s electric cars. It is good to see a UK production facility at the forefront of making a product that is likely to take centre stage in the motor industry over the coming years.
But the new jobs are also being created in order to help produce the electric cars themselves – in the form of the Leaf. The new-look Qashqai will also benefit from the new staff.
The company is apparently dealing with ‘record levels of production’ according to Kevin Fitzpatrick, who is vice president for manufacturing in the United Kingdom. He said the company is now actively recruiting for new engineers and maintenance technicians to join the current highly skilled workforce. The new staff will help maintain the very high production levels currently being experienced in the factory, and will help to hit targets for Nissan’s future projects.
The news is of course very good for Sunderland as a whole, since there is nearly always a ‘knock-on’ effect as regards the local community; more money will be in circulation, which is likely to be spent in local shops and businesses.
