There are few vehicles that startrescue.co.uk wouldn't provide Annual Breakdown Cover for, but the proposed world-record breaking Bloodhound is likely to be one of them. The vehicle will be designed to break the land speed record, which currently stands at 763mph. A target of over 1000mph has been set by the team behind the machine.
The Bloodhound will be piloted by Wing Commander Green of the RAF, who has over 50 years of experience in flying front line aircraft, including the Phantom and the Tornado. The vehicle will be propelled by a Typhoon engine and a rocket hybrid, and will be created with technology that will be freely available to the public.
This 'open source' ethos is key to the project, which hopes to inspire youngsters to go into engineering, science and mathematics. This sentiment has also been echoed by Whitehall, who will be providing support through the RAF. A group from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers will be on hand to help build the machine, and will provide support when the Bloodhound team go to South Africa to break the world record in 2014. Wing Commander Green also piloted the current world record holding machine Thrust Supersonic, in 1997.
The project director of Bloodhound, Richard Noble, commented: "We are delighted that the MoD and REME will be joining us and sharing in this unique adventure. Their young engineers have great skills and attitude and will make a tremendous contribution to the building and running of the car."
