If you are new to the world of motorcycling, the categorisation of the various licences can be rather baffling. From January 19th of 2013, there will be four categories of motorbike licence. This may seem a lot, especially in comparison to other European countries, or indeed compared to nations like India, where the idea of a licence at all is still pretty novel.
Here's a run-down of the 4 types:
• AM Category - this is for scooters (mopeds) only, and can be held from the age of 16 upwards.
• A1 Licence - For 17 years and over, this licence is restricted to 125cc use, without learner plates
• A2 licence - this type restricts you to 47bhp, or 35kW, and when taking your test you must ride a bike of 27bhp/20kW or more. You must also be at least 19 years old.
• A Licence - for those of 24 years or more, this is the full motorcycle licence.

As a new rider, you may wish to consider taking out motorbike breakdown cover for extra peace of mind during the first few months. And naturally, many motorcyclists rely on such cover throughout their riding lives.
