A startrescue.co.uk story...

The iconic moment when the DeLorean appeared on cinema screens in 1986 is surely one of the most memorable of the eighties. The film in which it appeared - Back to the Future - inspired many to purchase a real-life (if somewhat time-machine bereft) version of the car. Alas, the DMC-12 and the Northern Irish Dunmurry factory in which it was produced only enjoyed limited success. It wasn't because the car made too much use of its owners' breakdown cover policies - it was simply victim of the biggest slump in the US car market since the 1930s.

But 30 years after the factory closed, the DeLorean is set for a comeback, in the form of the DMC-EV. And it's not petrol driven - but electric.

According to DeLorean, the new DMC-EV can hit 60mph from standstill in under 5 seconds, with the ability to reach a top speed of 120mph. That's no small feat for an electric car. Indeed, it shows just how much power you can get from electric – particularly interesting given the widely held notion that electric will never out-muscle petrol. Indeed, the day that a battery-powered sports car can out-speed, say, a Bugatti Veyron, are a long way away. But it is surely in the pipeline.

But when you can enjoy a ride in an iconic time-machine sports car, who needs to go faster than 120mph?
