McLaren has released some stunning pictures of the new MP4-12C Spider, boasting some truly unique design features that easily rival those of its Ferrari and Audi competition. The car is 40kg heavier than the coupe version, but can nevertheless accelerate from standstill to 62 mph in a tiny 3.1 seconds, and 100mph in 6.1 seconds – so it’s not all surface gloss.
But all this amazing design and technology comes at a hefty price – £176,000 to be precise, which is £19,500 more than the coupe costs. The overall look of the car is characterised by the mid-mounted 3.8-litre V8 engine which is twin-turbocharged to generate 616bhp. The engine’s position has pushed the cockpit further forward than most sports cars, lending it an eager and quite unique look.
The key rivals to the new McLaren are the Ferrari 458 Spider and Audi R8 Spyder. Like the Ferrari, the MP4-12C Spider makes use of a folding metal hard-top.
Care should be taken when lowering the roof; drivers who insist on lowering it whilst in motion should observe a speed limit of 19mph. It’s not clear what happens if you try to do it at higher speeds, but it has to be bad!
While few of our customers who purchase cover for car breakdowns from us will be in the market for the new McLaren, if you do have the best part of £200,000 spare, this rear wheel drive can be ordered now. First production models are expected to be delivered in November.
