Range Rovers have always been popular in the USA, whether with east coast businessmen or west coast rap stars – but New York is where they really sell well. And the new Range Rover Sport sells more numerously in America’s largest metropolitan area than anywhere else in the world.
Fitting, then, that JLR has unveiled the all-new Sport in New York, ahead of the New York Auto Show 2013. The new model offers 7 seats – for the first time – and is up to 420kg lighter than the previous version.
As the auto fashion conscious of New York prepare to upgrade to the new model (at least, that’s what JLR will be hoping), they will perhaps be dazzled by the good looks of the Sport, which appears to be based more on the latest Range Rover than the Discovery – which formed the basis of the previous version. The new version also takes a few design cues from the exceptionally successful Evoque, although Land Rover is keen to point out that 75% of the new Sport is built with unique parts.
The bodywork is completely aluminium, which means the vehicle is 39 per cent lighter than the outgoing model, and offers better fuel consumption. It has also, says Land Rover, transformed Sport’s handling.
While the launch has focused heavily on the US market, the new Sport will of course be available in the UK to those among our car breakdown cover buyers who love Range Rovers – by summertime 2013. Prices have not yet been announced, but the entry level model is likely to be around £52,000.
