There are few groups in the world for whom it would be harder to find breakdown cover than the James Bond stunt team. Indeed, finding a willing insurer for any aspect of a James Bond stunt sequence would be problematic at best.
One of the most challenging sections of Bond 23 – Skyfall – was the car stunt scenes set in Istanbul. Naomi Harris plays Eve, who has to drive a Land Rover Defender extremely fast through the bustling streets of Istanbul in order to keep up with 007. As part of the action, a truck has to flip into Eve's path, before which both vehicles are required to navigate some serious Turkish traffic.
But how can Eve act and drive at the same time?
The interior shots of Eve are created with a specially modified Defender. On top of this vehicle sits a pod, from where stunt driver Ben Collins (ex Top Gear stunt man) controls the off-roader, so Naomi can get on with the acting. Steering, braking, gear-changing and accelerating are all carried out from the roof.
This is stunt choreography at its very best, and no wonder, since everyone will be expecting some of the year's most adrenaline-pumping stunts from Skyfall.
James Bond 23 opened in UK theatres on the 26th of October.
