A startrescue.co.uk story...

The quest to create ever-lighter vehicles is one that most modern car manufacturers have taken up in recent years, both for the sake of fuel economy and to enable more electronic wizardry to be packed on board. But one Hungarian agricultural worker may have taken light body-work a step too far, with his (nearly) all-wood car.

OK, perhaps he was less interested in creating an eco-friendly body, and more concerned with producing a vehicle that would get him noticed around Tiszaors, Hungary. And eye-catching it certainly is. Istvan Puskas built his car over four months, and only used metal where it was strictly necessary (a timber-based combustion engine has yet to become available, for example).

The engine comes from a Polish-built Fiat 126, while the steering wheel comes from an old Mercedes-Benz. The gearbox, however, is made out of wood, as is most of the rest of the vehicle.

The 51 year old said: "I love to work with wood. And I like to create unique things which attract interest from people."

Puskas was encouraged by his wife (‘Iron’, ironically) to build the car during the winter, when there is not much work around.

"My aim was to make it out of wood as much as possible. A wooden car must be made from wood!" Puskas points out.

Puskas won’t be taking out any short term European cover for any road trip this summer, however, as the local authorities will not let him on the main road.

The car will be sold to fund Puskas’s next project.
