Sweden is a wonderful country to visit any time of year, but the warmer months are when most UK holidaymakers decide to make the trip. Stunning mountain ranges, verdant forests and dynamic cities ensure that this unique Scandinavian nation has something for everyone. And for many, the freedom offered by the open road means that taking the car to Sweden is a popular option.
But how can you get your car to Sweden?
If you wish to take the long route, you might decide to use a roll-on roll-off ferry at Dover, arrive at Calais and drive across northern Europe, before entering Sweden from Denmark, over the Oresund Straits Bridge or using another ferry.
Alternatively you could take a ferry (DFDS Seaways) from Harwich, Essex, to Esbjerg on Denmark’s western coast, before driving across to the Oresund crossing and into Sweden.
You might also take a ferry to the Hook of Holland (StenaLine) if you wanted to enter the European mainland that way.
Below are some resources to help you plan your journey:

Remember when driving in Sweden that:
- You must drive on the right
- Headlights must be used 24 hour a day
- Seatbelts must be worn by all passengers
- You must be over 18 and have a valid licence to drive
- There are strict limits on how much alcohol you can have in your blood and still drive: aim to avoid drinking at all before driving.
And don’t forget to take out European breakdown cover before you go – an important piece of European road trip advice.
