We are all aware of how easily things can go wrong if we don’t pay attention whilst driving, but a set of videos released by the Highways Agency demonstrates that some drivers still take serious and unnecessary risks.
The focus of these videos, captured from CCTV cameras mounted along Britain’s highways, are risks that arise specifically around roadworks. One incident shows a vehicle undertaking and then pulling out in front of a HGV, making the driver swerve and causing the lorry to overturn.
In another video, a motorist does not see that traffic ahead of him is slowing down, resulting in their car ploughing into the queuing vehicles. Similarly, in another clip a HGV is seen hitting the rear of a car, propelling it into roadworks, just metres from workers.
Speaking about the risks inherent in driving near roadworks, roads minister Robert Goodwill commented: “The safety of those who work on our roads is paramount. Saving a few seconds on your journey is simply not worth the cost of the delays caused by these incidents, let alone the devastating impact they can have on lives and families.”

The Highways Agency is part of the Department for Transport, and is responsible for the maintenance and management of the core of England’s road network. As well as providing staff for incidents that take place on the roads, the Highways Agency also provides an information service and works alongside other government agencies.
