Gone are the days when Land Rover’s product range got updated about once every 15 years, a la the 1950s and 1960s. These days, the Indian-owned SUV giant is all about the choice, and just a week after showing the world what the new Range Rover will look like (the fourth generation no less), they have specified internal and external updates to the Freelander 2.
The outside changes are fairly nominal, with new front and rear lights, together with a choice of three additional colours – namely Havana Blue, Mauritius Blue, and, recalling their roots, Aintree Green. XS specification vehicles will see its 17inch wheels re-designed.
Internally you get a brand new centre console with a 7 inch touchscreen set-up for the sound system, phone and satnav. You also get better storage and higher quality build materials. Among the various new pieces of equipment are keyless start and an electric parking brake.
Those in the market for the 2.2 litre diesel version will enjoy better response thanks to the new turbocharger. 148bhp and 187bhp versions are available as before.
No news as yet if these changes will affect the price, but it isn’t likely to go far above the £22,700 starting price for a basic version. If you want the Land Rover pedigree but haven’t quite saved enough pennies for the new Range Rover (starting at a fiver short of 70 grand), then the Freelander 2 offers good value.
