As a global brand with specific models for it’s various markets, Ford has the power to take a popular model from one territory, and try it out in another. So far, Ford has done this with the Fiesta and the Focus, launching them in America. In return, we in Europe have been given the US-side Kuga, a tough all-wheel drive that promises much more than its predecessor.
The original Kuga lacked space, provided rather a jarring ride and a lot of tyre noise. Thankfully, the new Kuga has been improved upon in all these areas and more. The original version had limited development funds, and allegedly, even Ford’s C-segment vehicle line director, has admitted it wasn’t a very good car. This incarnation, however, appears to have benefitted from the best of Ford’s engineering prowess and money.
Much improved head and leg room, as well as space for up to 3 adults in the back, make this a highly useful vehicle. An ‘air kick’ operated boot is one of the more gimmicky additions, but under the surface critics have applauded the solid handling and overall fun nature of the machine.
Prices start from £20,895 rising to £29,795 – and £32,345 with options. A top speed of 122mph and the ability to hit 62mph in 10.4 seconds from standstill, make this a pretty respectable all-wheel-drive. Fuel economy is also impressive, at 38.2mpg/45.6mpg (EU Urban/Combined). CO2 emissions are 162g/km, so it falls into VED Band G - £170 a year.
The new Kuga is certainly a good option for those among our annual breakdown cover customers who are on the lookout for a new AWD, and gives the competition – such as the Qashqai +2 and the Honda CR-V – a run for their money.
