A startrescue.co.uk story...

A shiny red Fiat 500 that was once proudly owned by none other than Johnny Herbert is up for sale on the internet. The British Formula 1 driver was well-liked among motorsport fans, chiefly because of his cheeky, fun loving nature – a character that seems to come through in this little Italian car.

Herbert was a good driver, but certainly fell foul of bad luck on a number of occasions, which arguably meant he didn’t achieve as much as he might have in the arena of motorsport. Often through no fault of his own, Johnny was forced to finish numerous F1 races early. His worst piece of bad luck – in what is considered by many to be one of the worst accidents in the history of F3000 – saw Johnny seriously injuring his ankles and feet in a collision in 1988.

But, not one to be beaten down by having his acceleration and braking feet injured, Johnny returned to racing, this time to make his F1 debut a mere seven months later.

The Fiat 500 on sale is knocking on a bit now, but is still considered a reliable car that won’t have you calling up your breakdown cover provider every few journeys. Built between 1957 and 1975, the Fiat 500 was popular throughout Europe – something the Fiat company wished to revive in 2007 when it brought out a revamped version. It’s arguably now in the top league of revived cars, alongside MINI and the Beetle.
