In a city that has been campaigning against speeding for some time, it may seem odd that the local police force has invested in a 217mph boy racer’s dream car. But that is precisely what Dubai’s police department has done by buying a brand new Lamborghini Aventador.
Of course, the speed machine could be employed to catch some of the country’s many speed limit violators, but it is thought to be more of a promotional vehicle, rather than a crime-fighting workhorse.
Pictures of the Aventador were posted on the Dubai Police department’s Twitter feed, bearing the local constabulary’s livery. The Tweet was soon re-Tweeted thousands of times with the hashtag #onlyindubai.
While police in Britain can only dream of being handed an Italian supercar by the Home Office, coppers in Dubai must uphold their city’s image as a playground for the rich. But showing off police sports cars is a little jarring when set against the current campaign to reduce speeding on Dubai’s roads – where the offence is very common for two good reasons: firstly, the roads are long, straight and uncongested, and secondly, growling supercars are as common in Dubai as Ford Fiestas are in the UK. A wealthy petrol head’s dream come true.
As any of our car breakdown cover customers who have visited Dubai will know, the status derived from the right kind of car in this Emirate can be huge. And the police department has trumped everyone with this £360,000 head turner.
