Florence and its surrounding area attract many thousands of tourists from around the world every year, drawn by a wealth of history that few, if any, other cities can match. As the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence (Firenze in Italian) is jam packed with masterpieces - from paintings and sculptures to stunning Gothic churches.
A driving holiday in Florence and the surrounding Tuscan countryside is a very popular way of seeing this remarkable area, but there are a few things to take into account if you decide to drive across Europe and get your fill of Florentine culture, history and of course, food.
In Florence's city centre itself there is a "Zona a Traffico Limitato" or Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL), which means only vehicles with a ZTL permit can enter between 7.30am and 7.30pm. If your hotel is in the centre and you wish to drop off luggage or your family members, this is possible, but only after giving your hotel the details of your car, which they will pass on to the local police. This will prevent the number plate recognition system from picking up your car. After making a drop off, you must park your car outside the city centre.
Aside from this, driving in Florence itself can be a little frustrating due to the level of traffic. But the beautiful Tuscan countryside around it is ideal for a road trip, with much to explore.
Ensure you have either annual European or short term European breakdown cover before you set out, for full peace of mind.
