The South of France and especially the Cote d’Azur (Blue Coast) – known by most British people as the French Riviera – may seem out of reach for most folks, simply because it is so expensive. But taking a road trip along the coast need not cost the earth. The key is to spend your money in the cheaper towns and avoid expensive extras like restaurants – especially in places like St. Tropez and Cannes.
One particularly good route is that of Montpellier to Nice. If you want spectacular views of the Mediterranean, then you should opt for the coastal road (the other main option takes you inland). In between, you might find it most affordable to stay in Arles and Marseilles. The best way to ensure you get a good deal on accommodation is to book as far in advance as possible and choose hotels or guest houses that are out of the town centres.
This route is genuinely spectacular, and gives you a taste of how the other half live. Why not make a stop at Aigues-Mortes for lunch, a wonderful old walled village by the sea. Also, keep an eye out for the wild white horses of the Camargues, together with the beautiful green vineyards that roll across the landscape.
While the roads of the Cote d’Azur are generally good, you never know when your car might get into trouble, so make sure your European breakdown cover is up to date before you set out.
For those who really want to save money, stock up on cheaper food and drink at the supermarket and consider camping as an alternative to hotels and guest houses.
