Many of us pay a lot of attention to the increasing costs of motoring – such as how to get low cost cover, find breakdown insurance that doesn’t cost the Earth, and how to improve fuel efficiency. But we don’t always pay as much attention to how safety issues can change as regards location or season.
Road Safety Scotland recently enlisted former F1 driver David Coulthard to demonstrate how motorists need to adapt to altered driving conditions on country roads. A commercial was produced featuring Coulthard at the wheel of car, and a ‘ghost’ of a car in front of him, both driving along a country road. The lead car’s path mimicked a car that lost control on the same stretch of road, resulting in the driver’s death. Coulthard provides commentary on what the driver should have done, pointing out dangers posed by muddy roads, and, most perilous of all, taking corners too fast.
In the last seconds the viewer sees the ghost car take a corner too fast and tumble into a field.
As a road safety campaign aimed at those who drive dangerously on country roads, the ad cleverly features an F1 driver, famed for his high speed endeavours, stating that he would never attempt to drive at such speeds on country roads.
The final caption reads: “even the best drivers in the world adjust their speed on country roads.”
The campaign will be broadcast on TV and radio, and in cinema.
