The national speed limit of 60mph has long been in effect, and there is little call for it to be reduced. But former F1 World Champion Damon Hill would prefer it to be brought down to 55mph, pointing out in a recent interview with the Radio Times that he doesn't think motoring skills in the UK are as good as they could be.
“Most people aren’t safe to drive over 55 [mph],” he said.
In the interview he also disapproved of the idea that the motorway speed limit should be increased to 80mph, saying the notion made him "shudder."
Hill knows a bit about driving at speed, having won 22 Grand Prix and having won the 1996 F1 Championship.
Hill said he was against increased limits because - “people drive too fast on the motorway. Mostly they drive too fast, too close to the car in front, and they think they know what they’re doing. And they don’t."
He pointed out that while motor racing did inevitably demand speeds of over 200mph, it also required exceptional concentration. That concentration, he suggested, was something lacking in British driving culture.
As one of the leading vehicle recovery operators in the UK, we know how important it is to drive at safe speeds, but is reducing the speed limit going too far? Or do you agree with Damon Hill’s comments?
