One man who’s seldom needed car breakdown cover – mainly because he’s usually had the McLaren-Mercedes mechanics behind him – is David Coulthard. And today, even though he’s long-retired from F1 racing, he still gets to work with these super-mechanics, in the form of Red Bull Racing.
Most recently he had the chance to drive very fast through the Lincoln Tunnel, which goes under the Hudson River and connects New Jersey and New York. The stunt was part of a promotional tour of the USA by Red Bull Racing, aimed at stoking interest in the 2013 Grand Prix of America.
Coulthard managed to hit 190mph in the Red Bull Formula One car as he hurtled through the tunnel, making it to the other side in under a minute. While the Scottish driver was obviously pleased when he conducted an interview about the drive, he said, "It's a weird attack on your senses when you go fast and you've got sort of this closure of the tunnel leading to the point. I was disappointed we couldn't go faster!"
The 2013 Formula One Grand Prix of America will take place on a 3.2 mile street circuit, which has not yet been constructed. Taking in the New Jersey towns of Weehawken and West New York, the circuit promises impressive views of the Manhattan skyline – in what will surely be one of the most visually spectacular F1 meetings for years. The last time an F1 race was proposed in the New York Metropolitan Area was 1983, but it was cancelled as the circuit owners established their own race instead.
