A startrescue.co.uk story...

The Kawasaki Ninja motorbike is a fairly affordable way to get your fix of two-wheel speed, and as such you get all sorts of people riding one. But one demographic you may not expect to see hooning around town is a pair of Chinese monks.

But that’s exactly what a car passenger saw as he passed by two monks perched on a Ninja 300 in Guangdong Province recently. Aside from the fact that the pair were risking their necks by not wearing helmets, their choice of transport does not fit in with a simple monastic life.

The strange combination of high octane motorcycling and spirituality has been explained, however: it’s down to China’s numerous ‘fake monks’. Many of them can make good money by begging around high end shopping centres and making consumers feel guilty about their comparative wealth.

A number of scandals involving monks have arisen recently in the People’s Republic, with reports of monks being seen purchasing iPhones, driving expensive cars and frequenting massage parlours. The Kawasaki Ninja 300, while not being terribly expensive, nevertheless is a serious investment for the average ‘monk’. The 300 costs around £4,799 for an entry level version in the UK, but costs significantly more in China:  around £6,484 or 60,000 yuan.

If the monks have any money left over after their spending spree, we recommend they get some competitive motorbike breakdown cover, for a little extra peace of mind on the road.
