Caterham previewed its next model – the new AeroSeven Concept car – at the recent Singapore Grand Prix, where it surely caused a stir. The combination of classic looks and 21st century performance has made Caterham extremely popular with those who desire such qualities in a car, but the new styling appears to be taking the sports car firm into much more modern territory – at least in terms of styling.
Based on Caterham’s CSR platform, around which some very high performance cars have been built, the new AeroSeven boasts front pushrod suspension, an independent rear setup, revamped dampers, springs and anti-roll bars.
The new car is the product of Caterham’s various arms and features a 2.0 litre engine and carbon fibre body. 237bhp is delivered by the Ford Duratec based engine, enabling the concept car to hit 62 mph from standstill in just four seconds. A six speed manual gearbox and an anti-lock braking system may also feature in the final vehicle – the latter piece of technology coming from Caterham’s F1 division.
The F1 unit has had a big hand in the styling of the car too, or more specifically the aerodynamics, which help “deliver Caterham’s legendary agility and handling finesse,” – as well as make the car look very unique indeed.
The company has not yet decided which engine it will finally use.
The forward-looking styling of the concept car shouldn’t alienate lovers of the classic Caterhams, however, since the company intends to create a range of sports cars as they “look to meet the differing needs and desires of potential customers – from the lifestyle customer to the ultimate thrill-seeker,” said Graham Macdonald, Managing Director of Caterham Cars.
While the Caterham AeroSeven may be beyond the pockets of many of our breakdown cover customers, if you do have the financial wherewithal to drive off with a new Caterham AeroSeven, you can do so around Autumn of 2014.
