The Vulcan Bomber was one of the UK’s primary defensive weapons during the Cold War, yet despite its historical importance, only one serviceable bomber remains.
One group of British bikers, however, intend to keep the last Vulcan flying. They plan to ride from Vulcan XH558’s hangar in Doncaster, to Rome, where a Harley Davidson rally is to be held. They will raise money for the plane so it can take part in displays during the 2013 season.
The 1,300 mile journey will take three days to complete.
Donations will be directed to the Vulcan through the Sky Trust, which maintains and operates the aircraft. Speaking about the bike ride, the group’s leader, Adam Fleming said: "As an ex-serviceman I am acutely aware of XH558’s historical importance. We have been looking for ways to support her for a while. This trip ties in our enthusiasm for the Vulcan with our love of adventure, motorbikes and the Harley lifestyle, so everyone involved is really looking forward to it.”
The XH558, which was used by the RAF from 1956 to 1984, relies on public donations in order to keep flying.
Donations can be made on the Trust’s JustGiving.com/vts page. They will also be holding a raffle – the top prize for which is a Harley Davidson Superlow XL 833.
Startrescue.co.uk wishes the bikers well, and hopes they have adequate insurance from a vehicle recovery operator that offers European coverage.
