Fancy a typical Alpine experience before the weather turns really bad?

If you’re thinking that images of content-looking cows with large bells around their necks, fertile Alpine meadows, soaring snow-covered peaks and verdant forests punctuated with castles and old wooden chalets are just a myth – think again.

Road trip through Ettal, Germany

On this road trip you’ll start off in the beautiful town of Lindau on Lake Constance.

Don’t get in your car straight away though – take a wander around Lindau’s narrow streets lined with gabled houses. Then begin this 300 mile drive to Bad Tolz.

Along the way you’ll pass through the major towns of Oberstaufen, Oberammergau, Ettal and Garmisch, but you’ll also be able to stop at countless other tiny little settlements as you marvel at the beauty of the area.

This is a classic Alpine route, and arguably much more interesting than the more popular Romantic Road.

But despite being more interesting, it is more challenging, so make sure you have your driving hat fully on before you set out. A twisting set of roads await you, so ensure your breaking foot is fully limbered up too.

For those in the UK, this might not be the easiest location to get to, but it does provide you views of some of Europe’s most unique landscapes – ones that truly do look like the wrappers of German chocolate bars.

Before beginning your journey, make sure that your breakdown cover includes Germany (you might choose a short term option or have an annual policy that covers European mainland countries) – you can then enjoy the vistas with complete peace of mind, so that if you do breakdown, an expert vehicle recovery team will be with you in no time.
