I’ve always wanted to go to the Nurburgring (Nordschleife), but I simply have never managed to get round to it. That was, until I found myself with a free channel crossing (long story) and nowhere to go! Myself and a friend of mine only stayed for one night, but we did have a lot of fun.
In total, we only managed to do five laps in my Honda S2000 – but even that short period was enough to get a real feel for the track. I’ve been on a racing track a fair few times before, so I wasn’t expecting anything too spectacular from the Ring – but I have to say it did indeed live up to the hype. The first three laps we did were in the dry, and I have to say I it was quite nerve-racking to be learning a brand new track at the same time as being overtaken by all manner of other vehicles.
Our last two laps were in the wet, but by this time I had got to grips with the track layout and was only being overtaken by Ring-Taxis. There were one or two scary moments, but overall it was an amazing experience.
Safety is of course paramount, and I never drive beyond my limits. There were a fair few idiots on the track, so you have to keep your wits about you! If you ever try it yourself, make sure you leave plenty of room when overtaking.
Even if you’re not a driver, I recommend taking a trip to the car park outside the Ring – you get to see some amazing cars, but there are a lot of posers about!
If you do want to try out the Nurburgring, be sure to take out some short European breakdown cover before you leave the UK. Drive safely!
