Greece might not be the first place you think of when you hear the term ‘road trip’, but in fact many thousands of people explore Greece’s roads by car every year. It is true to say, however, that getting around Greece isn’t the easiest thing to do. This is quite understandable, given the complex nature of the country’s complex land formations and subsequent weaving roads.
A good road trip plan is to base your break on the ancient sites of the country. As well as giving you a wonderful sense to the nation’s history, you’ll get to see some of the most beautiful views in Europe. So, get your short term European breakdown cover up to date, and start your engines…
You might wish to start your journey at Delphi, where you might try to bump onto the Oracle of ancient times. Stop at the Sanctuary of Athena on the way, as you follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims.
Next, you might head to Nafplion, a stunning city – arguably one of the prettiest in Greece. Here you can explore the theatre of Epidauros and learn more of Homer’s poem about Myccenae and its King who started the Trojan War. Don’t forget to enjoy the Ancient Corinth here, either.
From here you might travel south to Monemvassia, where you’ll find one of the largest churches in southern Greece, Christos Elkomenos, and some wonderful, dizzying views. If you ever get tired of the history, you can always take a dip in the azure blue waters off the coast. Don’t forget to see the Bourtzi Tower either.
After this, it’s time to travel west, to Greece’s glittering capital, Athens. A city that needs no introduction, ensure you leave plenty of time to enjoy its many splendours.
