The temperatures have dropped, and you’re going to have to go a long way to find some warmth – so what do you do? The only thing you can do – embrace the chilly winter months! One way you might do this is with a long weekend in Belgium’s Bruges, where the weather only adds to the charm of the extensive medieval architecture. Also, with Christmas just around the corner, there’s never been a better time to whisk yourself and one or two loved ones down to this picturesque Belgium town.

You will of course have to get yourself down to Dover and onto a ferry before you do anything, but once you have, the route to Bruges is surprisingly simple. After you’ve negotiated the roads around Calais, travel along the A16 and once you enter Belgium ensure you’re on the E40. From here, follow the signs for Bruges. It should take you less than an hour and a half from Calais to reach Bruges, as long as you don’t make any wrong turnings!

As well as the wonderful old medieval cathedral, there are lots of other treasures to enjoy in and around Bruges; Christmas shopping, lots of excellent restaurants and cafes – and if you fancy a bit of history, the Menin Gate and Dunkirk are sure to provide plenty to keep you occupied (less than an hour’s drive each).

As always, you should make sure your breakdown policy is up to date and covers you for French and Belgian roads. If you only have UK cover, consider taking out European breakdown cover – either short term or annual.
