A startrescue.co.uk story...

Deciding on where to take your summer holiday can be tricky, especially if your partner and/or offspring have different ideas about where they want to go. The regular two-week holiday can be fairly restricting, because you are normally based in one resort, with only the option for day excursions if you get tired of it.

But if you have a campervan – or even a car you can sleep in – you can enjoy huge flexibility, and you may even be able to please everyone in your group. Southern Europe is a particularly good area to explore, with stunning coastal landscapes and excellent roads. One popular route is Barcelona to the Italian Adriatic.

This journey enables you to explore one of Spain’s most vibrant cities, and then visit the foothills of the Pyrenees followed by France’s Mediterranean coast. Take in Avignon, Marseille and a host of picturesque fishing towns and villages.

This route also lets you enjoy the southern reaches of the French Alps, before reaching the Italian Lakes. The diamond in the crown of this system of lakes is surely Lake Maggiore, offering stunning views. Lake Orta provides a quieter but equally delightful set of vistas.

Back down along the Italian coast, and you might call into Bologna, the culinary capital of Italy, or, if you prefer somewhere less busy, you can enjoy delicious seafood in a smaller coastal town.

So, if you have a campervan, caravan or people carrier – or a spacious car – why not consider the south coast of Europe for your next getaway? Don’t forget to take out European breakdown cover before you set out.
