When you buy a car with the credentials and price tag such as a Ferrari has, you don’t expect to have to call out your breakdown cover provider on a regular basis. But with 50 Ferrari F40s joining the Silverstone Classic event this year and being put through their paces on one of the world’s fastest circuits, trained mechanics might well be in demand.
The event, which will be held from 20 to 22 July, has been organised by the Ferrari Owners’ Club of Great Britain. According to Nigel Chiltern-Hunt: "A parade of those F40s present is planned for the Sunday and it will undoubtedly be the largest gathering of F40s ever seen anywhere in the world and will certainly beat the club's own previous record of 40 F40s seen at the Silverstone Classic in 2007."
The F40 is an enduring symbol of what a supercar ought to be; many believe the model to be the very finest car of its kind ever built. Only 1,315 Ferrari F40s were manufactured between 1987 and 1992, yet the model was one of the ultimate status symbols of the late eighties and nineties – indeed, it still is.
Boasting a twin-turbocharged V8 that could develop 478bhp, it is understandable that the F40 was the first road car to breach the 200 mph mark. If this fact weren’t enough to make the car a legend, cutting edge styling did the rest.
