If the wide open roads of the continent are calling you, but you need a bit of additional motivation, then it could be time to rent out a few road movies.

Here are five of the most inspiring road trip films ever made...or at least that's what we think.

Sightseers, 2012

OK, Sightseers probably falls into the 'how not to do a road trip category'.

This dark comedy traces the misfortunes of Chris and Tina as they 'enjoy' a campervan holiday in Yorkshire. Things are going well until Tina is accused of dropping litter by a hiker, who pays the ultimate price for his interference.

A murderous but amusing crime spree ensues.

Beavis and Butthead Do America, 1996

Another 'don't do this on your road trip' warning comes from everyone's favourite badly drawn mono-syllabic morons, Beavis and Butthead.

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore join them on their animated adventure across the USA.

National Lampoon's Vacation, 1983

Staying stateside, this is arguably the funniest addition to the National Lampoon franchise.

A family road trip to Walley World goes dreadfully off script as cantankerous Aunt Edna decides to come along too.

Sideways, 2004

Buddy movies aren't usually based around wine-tasting road trips – but this one is, and somehow it works.

It stars Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, and has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 96 per cent.

Road Trip, 2000

Breckin Meyer and Seann William Scott (who appeared in Dude, Where's My Car? in the same year), star in this trans-American road trip flick that delivers plenty of laughs along the way.

We hope your next road trip is not as troublesome as experienced in these films – but at least as amusing.

Don't forget your breakdown cover if you're heading for Europe this summer!
