For those of you who have ever undertaken a substantial road trip, you will no doubt have your own nuggets of advice as regards how to have a safe and pleasant journey. But here are our own pieces of road trip advice, so you can have a trip that is truly memorable – for all the right reasons.
1. Be careful who you take with you.
Road trips can be very long, but they can seem even longer if you don’t get along with your passengers. Some people only find out they actually don’t like someone after spending a few hours or days in a car with them. But for most people, such an experience shouldn’t be necessary. Mother-in-laws and over-zealous back-seat drivers are not recommended.
2. Don’t let your fuel gauge go below one third full.
And if you’re driving in the Australian outback or the wastelands of Mongolia, just fill up whenever you see anyone or anything selling fuel. But even if you’re in a relatively populated part of Europe, it’s a good idea never to let your fuel get too low, however much fun you’re having. It’s always tempting to do it later, but in this case, there’s no such thing as being over-cautious.
3. Plan your route, every day
Being spontaneous is great in movie road trips, but it is less impressive when you end up in a dead end country lane at midnight, with the rain coming down and an empty fuel tank. Try to plan your route every day, so you don’t take wrong turnings and don’t waste valuable holiday time. If you have a satnav, use it. And don’t forget to download the map for Outer Mongolia if you think you might need it.
