Generally, Minis are not known for suffering car breakdowns, but according to BMW there is a tiny chance that a fault with an electric water pump may cause such an event to occur in some models – which has led to the recall of 235,000 vehicles.
29,868 of the Minis in question were purchased in the UK. The problem affects a range of Minis, including the Cooper S and John Cooper Works models, manufactured between March of 2006 and January of 2011.
Owners of affected models will be contacted in the coming weeks, and will be offered a replacement part for the water pump.
BMW, who own the British carmaker, say there have been no recorded injuries associated with the issue. The problem came to the company’s attention when a Mini bought in the UK suffered an engine-related fire. In all, replacing the defective – or potentially defective – part should take around an hour.
The Mini is something of a UK automotive success story, since it has sold exceedingly well around the world, as well as in the UK. The Oxford based manufacturer’s future lies in maintaining its strong position in the US, but also in building its brand profile in China and India, where such a vehicle may be seen as something of a status symbol.
With luck, the strength of the Mini brand will ensure that it gets through this substantial recall with little more than a few scratches.
