The latest incarnation of VW’s Polo is here at last, but how does it match up to its rivals? We’ve taken a look at some key opinions from theUK’s motoring press.

Chris Knapman is impressed by the new Polo, which he marks well in the 10 categories examined – except for ‘fun to drive’ for which he awards the car a 5. The ‘Dashboard layout’ gets the best score, 9, followed by ‘Comfort’, ‘Fuel economy’, ‘Affordability’ and ‘Safety’ – all on 8. At £11,100, the new Polo offers good value, especially since the car keeps its re-sale value longer than rivals – because, you guessed it, it’s a Volkswagen – a brand that the average breakdown repair insurance operative doesn’t get to see very often. 8/10 points.

The Polo also doesn’t do too well in the ‘fun to drive’ stakes as far as the What Car review is concerned (the Ford Fiesta offers more driving pleasure, according to the review), plus the entry-level engine is criticised for its noise and lack of power. But the car is praised for its supreme comfort, as well as for having one of the finest interiors of any supermini available. The price also gets a thumbs up. 4/5.
Carbuyer
Carbuyer concurs with the previous two reviews, in that the new Polo is not as much fun to drive as the Fiesta, but says that the latter cannot compete with VW’s superb build quality. The 1.4 litre engine is praised here, offering as it does a pretty gob-smacking 83.1mpg. The review notes the model’s revised in-car technology, as well as there being no air conditioning on the entry-level version (optional for £720). 4.1 stars out of five.
