The Driving Standards Agency's theory test is often regarded as a necessary formality before the nerve-racking practical test can be considered. Occasionally, one might hear of a friend who fails their theory test due to jitters or poor preparation, or just maybe you know of someone who has somehow messed it up twice.
But could anyone fail it 105 times?
It's not multiple choice - the answer is yes. The DSA has released some fascinating figures about theory test failure rates, and the crowning jewel of that data is an unnamed lady from Essex who has comfortably breached the '100 fails' mark.
While unsuccessful at passing the exam - which features 50 multiple choice questions and a 75 point Hazard Perception Test – she is far and away the best in Britain at failing this particular test. Only a man from Peterborough came anywhere near the Essex lady, with a still mightily-impressive 84 fails.
While many motoring groups have expressed surprise at the dogged learner, the DSA have quite politely pointed out that a number of resources are available to help them and others pass their theory, including revision books and special smartphone apps. One can't help hoping that if these two ever do pass their theory and their practical, they get 'fully comped' - and some very reliable car breakdown cover.
